I’m Going To Story 2012!

By the time you read this I’ll be in Chicago, fully immersed in STORY 2012. Story is a conference for creatives in every field including writers, artists, designers, film makers, musicians and more.

Normally I don’t have an opportunity to go to these conferences because of the cost, including travel and hotel. But thankfully this year I got free tickets because I am a staff writer at Prodigal Magazine. This covered both Katie and I so we decided to make the trip an early birthday present for me (If you’re wondering, my birthday is the Sept. 25th and I accept cash, check & credit cards.)

I’m super excited about this opportunity but not mainly for the conference. I’m excited about the people I’m going to get to meet. Some of us have already organized a meetup through Twitter. I’ll be able to have dinner about 25 amazing people whose blogs I read regularly.

This is so much different from the conferences I’ve been to in the past. I’m not much of a networker so if I didn’t go to the conference with you, I wasn’t interacting with you. But social media has opened up a whole new world in this respect. I’ve already made plans with people I’ve never met in my life. It’s awesome!

The other part I’m really excited about is visiting Chicago. I can’t count how many people have told me it’s their favorite city in the world. I can’t wait to see the sights with my wife and eat way more delicious food than I probably should.

But I want to turn it over to you while I’m gone.

Have you every met up with people through Twitter? How about at a conference? What was that experience like? Share your story!

  1. I am SO glad I got to meet you and your beautiful wife, Tony. Eating hot dogs with you on a street corner and having dinner as a Prodigal fam was one of the highlights of my whole experience. I’m so glad you could make it and see a little bit of my city. Are you going to do a recap? I would love to know your thoughts on some of the presenters! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I’m sooooo sad I’m not at STORY. Next year for sure! Take good notes. I’ve met a ton of blog and Twitter friends. In fact, I just spent last weekend at a lake house with 19 dear ones. About half of my good friends in Nashville started out as online acquaintances.

Can’t wait for our paths to cross someday, Tony!

  4. Awesome, Tony! I hope you and Katie have an awesome time! I have met with the West Coast Ninjas {KC Procot, Chris Goforth, David Miles, Cindy Holman, Deanna Maurowski, Melissa Brotherton} a few times and it’s been way more awesome than I could have imagined. The first time we got together, I walked into the room and had an immediate feeling of “these are my people!” It was honestly one of the coolest experiences of my life. Of course, there was also the time I met Melissa Brotherton for the first time when she and her tribe came to my house for dinner. Now, she is one of my dearest friends. Also an awesome experience. I’ve not been to any conferences yet. Sadly, most of theM are on the east coast ad my current life season makes it rather difficult for me to fly the coop without majorly disrupting a few things. But, I def wanna go someday! Hopefully, I’ll see you and Katie there! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I remember that. I wish I could have been a part of the PNW meetup! That part of the world is definitely on our bucket list so I’ll keep you posted on when we make it up that way.
